LEO C-band Commercial GNSS: The Case for Going Small

Nov 16, 2022

TrustPoint

At the November 2022 PNT Advisory Board session, TrustPoint CEO and Co-Founder Patrick Shannon presented a forward-looking vision for the evolution of global positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) infrastructure. In his talk, “Leveraging LEO Satellites for Accurate and Reliable PNT: Less Is More,” he outlined how TrustPoint’s approach to microsatellite-based GNSS is reshaping performance, scalability, and resilience in space-based navigation.

Shannon emphasized that the next era of PNT innovation will be driven by smaller, faster, and more flexible systems—“small satellites, small orbits, and small waves”—that deliver high-accuracy signals at a fraction of legacy costs. He detailed TrustPoint’s focus on commercially driven, VC-backed innovation, with a technology stack spanning satellite payloads, signal architectures, and software-defined receivers. By leveraging moderate low-Earth orbits and compact, high-frequency antennas, TrustPoint aims to achieve secure, high-performance services that can evolve as quickly as consumer technology itself.

Closing his remarks, Shannon encouraged continued collaboration between government and commercial stakeholders to foster field testing, explore new spectrum bands beyond L-band, and modernize regulatory frameworks. “Less is more,” he concluded, “when smaller, smarter, and more agile systems are the key to unlocking a more secure and scalable PNT future.”
